Smita Thackeray, Sunny Leone, Nisha Harale & Rohit Verma unite for Freedom Parade on World AIDS Day

Mukkti Foundation, a non-profit foundation, spearheaded by Smita Thackeray has always been in the forefront when it comes to HIV awareness. The organization has relentlessly worked over the last two decades achieving global recognition by the World Health Organization (WHO) for their work in the field of HIV-AIDS and bringing about a change in the society.

This World AIDS Day, Smita Thackeray undertook the ‘Freedom Parade’ initiative where Sunny Leone, Nisha Harale and she united the Straight and the LGBTQ+ communities to put a fun spin on spreading awareness for the fight against HIV.

“It is time we thought of spreading AIDS awareness by positively joining hands with all the communities. Enjoy your life with small precautions because you have only one life.,” said Smita Thackeray.

“I believe it’s not a choice. I believe you are born a certain way. You are born with a certain right to express yourself in whatever way you want. Love doesn’t know gender. Love doesn’t know whether you are a boy or girl. HIV is a stigma and there are so many ways you can get the disease. Just educate yourself if you don’t know how it spreads. If you want to dress like a woman, dress like a woman. If you want to dress like a man, dress like a man. Most of my friends are gays and lesbians and I am proud of them all,” expressed Sunny Leone.

The awareness against HIV and AIDS is much needed since India has the third largest HIV epidemic in the world, with 2.1 million people living with HIV. The most common means of spreading this HIV epidemic in India is by sexual transmission, which accounted for 86% of new infections in 2017/2018. Official records show that in the year 2017-18 alone 116 HIV positives died in Mumbai, showing a steep rise in HIV prevalence. This is just the official count and we suspect the reality to be even higher. Maharashtra also shows the highest number of HIV positive cases from the whole on India.

The first step towards Mukkti from HIV began with mass awareness!

Unity, Love & Awareness. Here are some glimpses of all the fun we had while ensuring that we all challenge the spread of HIV.

Plastic se Mukkti https://www.mukktifoundation.org/women/plastic-se-mukkti-phase-2/ https://www.mukktifoundation.org/women/plastic-se-mukkti-phase-2/#respond Wed, 05 Sep 2018 10:04:30 +0000 https://www.mukktifoundation.org/?p=22628
The Problem

The Maharashtra Government on 23rd June, 2018 banned all single use plastics under section 12 of Maharashtra’s Non-Biodegradable Act, with a penalty of Rs.5000 becoming part of 17 other states that have taken similar actions.

Our Solution

Cloth bags were popular before we started using plastic and now vendors have started looking into it as an alternative to plastic.
With this in mind we started considering Cotton and Jute bags as a durable yet eco friendly alternative to plastic. Mukkti Foundation broke ground in Phase I of our project by distributing Khadi bags in our neighborhood & at Phoenix Mall, Parel.

The enthusiastic response from public encouraged us to take our initiative further by expanding it into a sustainable project, serving not just the purpose of environment protection but also providing income to individuals who are economically and physically challenged.

The Big Picture

In Phase II, we want to set up airy (ventilated) rooms equipped with sewing machines and fabric to make these bags while ensuring safety and comfort of the people involved in making them.
Empowering women from impoverished households, disabled women, women in confinement is our priority as this will be an opportunity to learn skills while earning money. These bags will be distributed in Food outlets, Schools and colleges, Grocery/Retail stores and Farmers Markets.

In the next Phase we will scale up so that we can reach more beneficiaries all over india.
Our effort is to make fun, customisable bags made through sustainable and ethical means which can replace plastic and take the pressure off our sensitive ecosystem. Most of the plastic that has been produced still persists, and yes, it is a problem that will outlive people for many centuries.

Can’t help but dance with joy when you are joined by Tiger Shroff Especially if you are a child. This was today’s surprise for the kids of Shishu Vihar School, Dadar while they innocently practiced dance for a class, only to have Tiger Shroff show up and join in, to encourage them to follow their dream and keep a spring in their steps through life. Thank you Tiger for being someone our future generations can look upto.

We would like to thank each person in the Management and Staff of Shishu Vihar School, for enabling and encouraging such an event in their premise and for the great support they gave to the team of Mukkti Foundation. We have had the unique opportunity to conduct a Yoga workshop for the women at the Thane Prison, with the help of Ms. Parghi. We would like to thank the Thane Central Jail Administration for supporting our efforts and encouraging such activities. Hope what they learned today will further help them in their journey through reform as they work their way back to being free citizens of our society. All the best to them and thank you to all who have supported this endeavour.
